Jargon

The purpose of this area is to serve as a reference for common language used around not only this project but also the business operations within the company. Speaking a common language will lead to a better understanding of requests and problems as well as cut down on frustrations in miscommunication.

Basic Language

  • Dumpster, Containers, Cans, Roll Off, Front Load
    • Roll off - a construction type dumpster that common comes in volumes like 10 yards, 20 yards, 30 yards etc.
    • Front load - a commercial contract type dumpster. These are typically what you see at places of business or apartment complexes. They picked up by forks on the front of a truck and emptied on regular intervals. These come in smaller sizes like 5 yard and 10 yard.
  • Size, Volume - the specific amount of debris that can go into a dumpster, typically in yards.
  • Drop - delivery of a dumpster
  • New Delivery - delivering a dumpster to a customer who does not currently have one
  • Empty and Return - picking up a full dumpster from a customer, disposing of its contents, and returning it empty to the same customer.
  • Swap - delivering an empty dumpster and and removing a full dumpster from the same customer.
  • Pick Up - final pick up of a dumpster from a customer
  • MSW - municipal solid waste
  • C&D - construction and demolition

Mako Language

This is a reference for specific language and how it applies to the Mako application itself.

  • Searching, Quoting, Querying - the act of performing a search to find pricing for a given area.
  • Search Text - contextual information attached to quote search results
  • Cost Structure - Within quote search results, cost structure describes how material is typically disposed of by a given hauler. (EX Flat Rate or Haul + Disposal are commmon)
    • Flat Rate - The contents of a dumpster are hauled and disposed of for a single cost
    • Haul + Disposal - The contents of a dumpster are hauled and disposed of for separate costs
  • Boundaries - A large set of coordinates that define an entity on a map (MSA, locale, service area, etc.)
    • Locale - The boundaries of a civic area or locality like a zip code
    • Service Area - The boundaries of an area, defined by a hauler, that the hauler is willing to service.
    • Special Use, Special Use Service Area - The boundaries of an area, related directly to a single hauler, that are for any reason noteworthy. (EX noting that the hauler has been asked and will not service an extended area)
    • Geo Note, Geographic Note - The boundaries of a noteworthy area on a map that does not relate to any hauler but is still important for any number of reasons. (EX noting areas with strict permit laws)
  • Alert, Hauler Alert, Service Area Alert, Product Alert - A way of expressly notifying users of important information that can impact making a sale, hauler availability, or serviceability.
  • Waste Type - Classifications of 'what can go into a dumpster' in varying degrees of specificity. (EX. MSW, C&D, Dirt Only etc.)
  • Debris Type - Very broad classifications applied to waste types to describe them. Each waste type will have one or many of these classifications.
    • Household Debris
    • Construction Debris
    • Special Debris
  • Fill Type(s) - Specific items that, amongst most haulers, are noteworthy because their acceptability is questionable or involves exceptions. Each product can accept zero or many of these with or without notable exceptions.
    • Yard Waste
    • Stumps
    • Appliances
    • Electronics - typically things that contain printed circuit boards (PCB)
    • Mattress/Boxspring
    • Concrete
    • Dirt
    • Brick
    • Block
    • Gravel
    • Asphalt
    • Leed
  • Ranking - A score that is derived or manually set for a product within its market based on its volume and waste type. Ranks are specific and unique so a market like Cleveland will only ever have one 10 yard MSW dumpster ranked #1.
  • Hauler Score - A tie breaking value used if products have the same rank, waste type, volume, and accept the same debris types or fill types - higher score is better.
  • Market, MSA - How we as a company geographically define what is Cleveland, Akron, Detroit, etc. These boundaries are managed within Mako.
  • Availability - A standardized way of noting when a hauler can perform a service if notified by a given cut off time.
    • Same Day
    • Next Day
    • Window EX 1-3 days, 2-4 days, etc.
    • Saturday
    • Sunday
